Shanghai Urban Planning and Exhibition Center (SUPEC), Shanghai, China
As one of the most influential cities in the world, Shanghai is a global leader in the development of megacities. The current mission statement "Shanghai 2035" bundles all action plans, development concepts and guidelines in an overarching concept with the clear goal of a competitive, innovative, but also livable, healthy city, from quantity to quality.
As one of the most influential cities in the world, Shanghai is a global leader in the development of megacities. The current mission statement „Shanghai 2035“ bundles all action plans, development concepts and guidelines in an overarching concept with the clear goal of a competitive, innovative, but also livable, healthy city, from quantity to quality.
Like the city, the museum “Shanghai Urban Planning and Exhibition Center” (SUPEC) will now face the future: A careful renovation concept was developed and implemented for the landmark building. Around the museum, public areas were upgraded. The aging exhibition has been modernized, with a focus on the integration of innovative and interactive ways of presentation as well as contemporary educational methods.
The exhibition concept integrates the new Master Plan 2035, transforms the museum as a public place of education into a showcase for the city, incorporates research and science and offers space for participation processes.
The three fields of action from the urban development concept „the humanistic city“, „the innovative city“ and „the sustainable city“ will each be dedicated to a building level.
The exhibition methodology is changing from the pure reception of content to interaction and emotional experience. The exhibition concept is linked to an interest-oriented route, the so-called “Hyperlink wayfinding”. With the help of big data and smart technologies, individual tours are created.
Furthermore „Urban Labs“ playfully introduce visitors to science: School classes, groups of experts or visitors can find out about current global research results and understand the connections in the city based on mostly digital experimental setups.
Digital Twin and VR-Dome
The centerpiece of the exhibition is the 10x20 meter virtual reality dome, where visitors and experts can walk and experience a digital twin of the city of Shanghai in various dimensions: From bird flight over the city to walking through streets, parks and buildings.
In cooperation with programmers and experts for high-end projections, SBA developed a digital city model that can impressively provide visitors with a wealth of information on urban development and on the city of Shanghai.
Thanks to state-of-the-art VR technologies and 23 high-performance projectors, the digital city model in the walk-in dome looks very plastic even without 3D glasses. An intuitive interface allows visitors and museum staff to easily navigate the city model.
