Why does this project represent "Made in Germany"? |
Reconstruction of existing buildings vs. new construction / high-tech building in a historic setting |
The Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz is a listed building in the centre of Munich. In the course of a general renovation, the foyer, auditorium and stage were refurbished and a new extension for rehearsal rooms and administration was built.

To make the new building possible on the completely overbuilt site, several underground floors were necessary, which were built in a watertight building pit enclosure more than 10 m deep. During the extensive work in the excavation pit, the stability of the directly adjacent residential buildings, as well as the listed façade, had to be guaranteed at all times, and the complete functional preservation of the historic stage had to be maintained.

The orchestra rehearsal hall was arranged on the roof of the new building as a steel and glass construction in an amorphous structure and forms the visually striking end of the building.
